Distribution
The species is almost confined to central southern England, where it is fairly widespread, but with two records from central Scotland. It is widespread in western and central Europe but has not been recorded from Ireland and the Netherlands.

Habitat and ecology
Z. stroemi occurs on deeply fissured trunks of pine and large oak trees, and occasionally on lower branches. It spins a small, delicate orb web on the surface of the trunk, and lives in a retreat in deep fissures in the bark. Males are adult from June to September, females throughout the year.

Status
The species is abundant in some places in the south of England, but very local. Its specialised habitat may mean it has been under-recorded.

Threats
The loss of old pine and oak trees to intensive forestry, in which the trees are unlikely to develop the same degree of deeply fissured bark.

Management and conservation
Retain old pine and oak trees with fissured bark.
